My Welsh grandparents sent their two oldest sons to the United States when they were both early teens to avoid a life in the coal mines. The oldest son was my father who eventually became a small family farmer in northeast Kansas. Though his resources were very limited, he always had a camera handy and with donated used equipment even managed to set up a darkroom in a spare bedroom of our old farmhouse. Sadly the farmhouse burned to the ground six months after his death destroying all of his work. Later we did get some copies back from our aunts. This is a photo he snapped when he caught my Mother dancing me around the living room (his actual caption on the back).
Undoubtedly my Dad's love of photography influenced my own which began with a little Brownie Starflash. There've been lots of film cameras through the years. I currently embrace digital with a Panasonic DMC Z60 which is as automatic or manual as I choose it to be with a fantastic Leica lens. I know, not the big "C" or "N" but huge bang for the buck and I like not only the results but frankly how it feels and operates.
Big HOWEVER. Once I ventured into Smartphones, the main influence on my choice was the camera. Even though the big buzz is generally around IPhones, Samsung and Pixel, I always research head to head comparisons and have found LG to consistently come out on top or hold its own. My current phone is the LG V40Thinq and has been so good my camera spends a lot of quality time in its bag. A huge number of photos that will appear on this site were taken with the V40 which was the only camera I used on the Scotland and Ireland tour. More about that in the blogs and galleries.
In addition to photography and writing there aren't many artsy things I don't like or do. While this website began years ago as vanity and/or potential for me doing some paid photography; it is now a labor of love and my main creative outlet for 2020 and beyond.
